چکیده

By modeling the statistical evolution of an avalanche created by 20 keV protons impacting the input surface of a z-stack microchannel plate ~MCP! detector, the mean secondary electron yield gC of avalanche electrons propagating through a MCP channel is measured to equal 1.37 for 760 V per MCP in the z stack. This value agrees with other studies that used MCP gain measurements to infer gC . The technique described here to measure gC is independent of gain saturation effects and simplifying assumptions used in the segmented dynode model, both of which can introduce errors when inferring gC through gain measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~96!02110-7#

Preparation Studies for Secondary Electron Emission Experiments on Superconducting Niobium

Accelerator driven transmutation of waste is one complementary approach to deal with spent nuclear fuel as compared to permanent storage. High-energy protons generated by a particle accelerator collide with a heavy metal target producing neutrons. Long-lived radioactive isotopes interacting with the neutrons transmute into shorter-lived isotopes. To generate the high-energy protons efficiently,...

Anodic aluminum oxide microchannel plates

A new material for microchannel plates (MCP) is proposed — anodic aluminum oxide. Microchannel plates made of this material may be much cheaper than with conventional lead glass MCP. Also a significantly smaller channel diameter (up to 70 nm) is easily achievable, which means better spatial resolution and the possibility to operate in strong magnetic fields. Methods and means are developed for ...

Determination of the timing properties of the pulsed positron lifetime beam by the application of an electron gun and a fast microchannel plate

We show that the timing properties of a pulsed low-energy positron lifetime beam can be conveniently tested by an electron beam. We apply this method to study time resolution of the beam and electron scattering in a flat and a ’sawtooth’ shaped choppers. The results show that (i) time resolution of 160 ps is obtained, (ii) the scattering of the electrons and the secondary electron yield of the ...

Effects of Secondary Electron Emission on Charge Pulses from a Z-Stack Microchnnel Plate Photon Counting Detector with a Crossed Delay Line Anode Readout

A study of the effects of secondary electron emission on charge pulses from a microchannel plate (MCPs) photon counting detector with crossed delay line (CDL) anode readout is presented. The detector is a two-dimensional photon counting detector with fast count rate and good spatial resolution being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The CDL anode is constructed of two orthogonal plan...

Simulations of Fast X-ray Detectors Based on Multichannel Plates *

High-performance detectors with high spatial and time resolutions are required in applications such as imaging of fast processes, time-resolved coherent scattering, and time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy. Recently a new type of X-ray detector was proposed, based on microchannel plates (MCP) coated with resistive and emissive layers inside the pores by using atomic-layer deposition with better fun...
